Ship or transport items from Nigeria. Some families source everything in Nigeria and have it presented by proxy or during a visit home.

Source items locally and convert. UK, USA, Canada, and Europe all have African grocery stores and online suppliers. George fabric, schnapps, bitter kola, dried fish, and palm wine can all be sourced outside Nigeria. Many families accept cash equivalents for items that cannot be transported.

Hold the ceremony abroad. Increasingly, families are hosting the full Ime Ego and Igba Nkwu ceremonies in diaspora cities — with elders flying in from Nigeria and items sourced locally.

A word on bride price and feminism

Many Igbo women — educated, successful, diaspora-raised — ask a fair question: does bride price reduce a woman to a transaction?

The answer most Igbo women and elders give is no — but only when it is done with the right spirit. When a family uses bride price to extort or delay, it corrupts the tradition. When it is done with humility, generosity, and genuine honour, it is one of the most moving parts of the entire marriage process.
