Igbo bride price list explained: what to expect in 2025

What is on a typical Igbo bride price list? How much does it cost? And how do diaspora couples handle it from abroad? Everything you need to know.

The most misunderstood part of Igbo marriage

No part of Igbo tradition generates more questions โ€” and more misconceptions โ€” than the bride price. Western observers sometimes misread it as buying a woman. Nothing could be further from the truth.

In Igbo culture, bride price โ€” known as Ime Ego or Ibu Ego depending on the community โ€” is an act of honour. The groom's family is saying to the bride's family: we see what you have built in this woman, we respect it, and we acknowledge it with these gifts. It is gratitude formalised into tradition.

Understanding what is actually on a typical Igbo bride price list โ€” and how it works for diaspora couples โ€” helps remove the mystery and lets couples approach the process with clarity and confidence.

What is typically on an Igbo bride price list

Every community in Igboland has its own specific list, and no two families are identical. However, a typical list includes items from these categories:

Drinks

  • Several bottles of schnapps (usually Hennessy or London Dry Gin)
  • Palm wine โ€” often measured in kegs or clay pots
  • Cases of malt drinks and soft drinks
  • Beer (Star, Heineken, or Guinness Foreign Extra)

Food items

  • Live goats (number varies by community, usually 2โ€“5)
  • Bags of rice
  • Yams
  • Stockfish and dried fish
  • Salt, pepper, and seasoning

Fabric and clothing

  • George fabric for the bride's mother and female relatives
  • Lace fabric
  • Ankara sets

Cash component

  • The cash amount varies enormously by family and state. It is symbolic โ€” not a price tag. In some communities it is modest; in others it reflects the family's expectations of the groom's ability to provide.

Kola nuts and obi items

  • Obi Igbo (bitter kola), orogbo, ose oji
  • Presented and blessed at the start of the ceremony

How much does Igbo bride price cost in total?

This varies significantly. In Anambra, Imo, Enugu, Ebonyi, and Abia states, the lists differ. In some families the total cost โ€” drinks, goats, fabric, cash, and other items โ€” might come to ยฃ2,000โ€“ยฃ5,000 when sourced in the UK. Others may be significantly more or less.

The most important thing to understand is that the amount is negotiated between families, not imposed. Families who demand excessive amounts are generally frowned upon within Igbo communities. The spirit of the exercise is honour, not commerce.

How diaspora couples handle it

For Igbo couples living abroad, the bride price process typically works one of two ways:

Ship or transport items from Nigeria. Some families source everything in Nigeria and have it presented by proxy or during a visit home.

Source items locally and convert. UK, USA, Canada, and Europe all have African grocery stores and online suppliers. George fabric, schnapps, bitter kola, dried fish, and palm wine can all be sourced outside Nigeria. Many families accept cash equivalents for items that cannot be transported.

Hold the ceremony abroad. Increasingly, families are hosting the full Ime Ego and Igba Nkwu ceremonies in diaspora cities โ€” with elders flying in from Nigeria and items sourced locally.

A word on bride price and feminism

Many Igbo women โ€” educated, successful, diaspora-raised โ€” ask a fair question: does bride price reduce a woman to a transaction?

The answer most Igbo women and elders give is no โ€” but only when it is done with the right spirit. When a family uses bride price to extort or delay, it corrupts the tradition. When it is done with humility, generosity, and genuine honour, it is one of the most moving parts of the entire marriage process.

The woman is not being bought. She is being celebrated.
