Words that carry weight
The Igbo language is one of the most expressive in the world. It has words for feelings, states of being, and qualities of character that have no direct English equivalent. When we chose names for IgboCrush's premium membership tiers, we went looking for words that carried real meaning.
We found Odogwu and Achalugo.
What does Odogwu mean?
Odogwu (pronounced oh-dog-woo) is an Igbo word that means a great man — a champion, a leader, someone of strength and honour. It is a title of respect. In traditional Igbo communities, an Odogwu was a man who had distinguished himself through courage, integrity, and achievement.
When an Igbo man is called Odogwu, it is one of the highest compliments he can receive. It means you are taken seriously. You have earned your place.
We gave the male premium membership this name because we believe men who pursue love with intention, who invest in real connection, who show up properly — they deserve that recognition.
What does Achalugo mean?
Achalugo (pronounced ah-cha-loo-go) is an Igbo word that describes a woman of rare beauty and grace — not just physical beauty, but the full presence of a woman who commands respect and admiration. It is a name given to daughters as a blessing. It is spoken with reverence.
We gave the female premium membership this name because the women on IgboCrush are exactly that. They are accomplished, intentional, and worthy of the very best.
Why naming matters
Names in Igbo culture are never arbitrary. They carry meaning, history, and aspiration. When parents name a child Odogwu or Achalugo, they are declaring something about who that child will be.
